Secondary Treatment Systems are widely used across Australia for their ability to treat household wastewater to high-quality standards. This allows for the reuse of water in areas near your home and neighbouring properties, often above ground, providing peace of mind.
The system treats all wastewater generated by your home, including sewage (black water) from toilets and bidets, and sullage (grey water) from sinks, washing machines, dishwashers, showers, and baths. Taylex ABS systems utilise naturally occurring bacteria present in wastewater to sustainably treat the water. The wastewater is held in compartments where bacteria flourish and naturally treat the water without the use of harmful chemicals or additives.
Secondary Wastewater Treatment Systems may be known by different names in various regions, such as Home Sewage Treatment Plant (HSTP), Secondary Treatment System (STS), On-site Sewage Facilities (OSSF), Aerated Wastewater Treatment Systems (AWTS), Aerobic Treatment Units (ATU), or Aerobic Septic Systems.
How do Taylex Wastewater Treatment Systems work?
All household wastewater from your bathrooms, toilets, kitchen, and laundry naturally flows into your Taylex Wastewater Treatment System using gravity.
STEP ONE
The first stop for your household wastewater is the ‘Primary Chamber’. Here, solids naturally settle to the bottom, while fats and oils rise to the top, leaving a clearer “Supernatant Zone” in the middle. This clarified zone proceeds to the next stage of treatment.
STEP TWO
Next is the ‘Secondary Chamber’, where further settling occurs. In traditional septic systems, this would typically mark the end of the treatment process, with effluent discharged onto the property relying on soil absorption. However, in a Taylex system, there are four additional stages to ensure clean, safe water for your property. If you have an ABS-NR system, an additional Bio Block in this chamber enhances separation of solids.
STEP THREE
The ‘Aeration Chamber’ follows, where a Nitto Blower quietly and efficiently introduces oxygen through tiny bubbles. These bubbles pass through a structure known as “Biomass”, which traps air to nourish naturally occurring aerobic bacteria. These bacteria break down remaining organic matter, polish the water, and eliminate odours.
STEP FOUR
In the ‘Clarification Chamber’, further settling occurs. Once settled, the mix of aerobic bacteria and fine particle solids is recirculated back to the Primary Chamber to maintain its efficiency and prevent odours.
STEP FIVE
The ‘Disinfection Chamber’ is the next step, where a Chlorinator ensures any harmful bacteria, viruses, and pathogens are effectively removed. Using minimal chlorine, comparable to levels in swimming pools, this stage ensures the water is safe for irrigation.
STEP SIX
Finally, when the Disinfection Chamber reaches capacity, an irrigation pump automatically activates. This pump sends the crystal-clear water to irrigate your designated area, completing a healthy water cycle that returns safe water to nature.

What is a septic tank?
A septic tank is an underground wastewater treatment system commonly used in areas without access to a centralised sewer system. It offers an efficient and cost-effective method for treating and disposing of household wastewater.
How do septic tanks work?
Wastewater Collection
All wastewater from toilets, sinks, showers, and other household sources is channelled to the septic tank through a network of pipes. Typically buried near the house, the septic tank receives and manages this wastewater.
Separation of Solids and Liquids
Upon entering the septic tank, the wastewater undergoes a separation process. The tank is divided into two compartments or chambers, allowing the wastewater to flow through while solids settle at the bottom. Solid waste, or sludge, sinks to the tank's bottom, while lighter materials like oils and fats float to the top, forming a layer called scum.
Anaerobic Digestion
Inside the septic tank, naturally occurring bacteria in the wastewater begin anaerobic digestion. This process breaks down organic matter without oxygen, converting solids into gases, liquids, and partially treated effluent.
Effluent Treatment
The partially treated effluent, containing water and dissolved organic matter, exits the septic tank and enters the drain field or leach field. This field consists of a network of perforated pipes or chambers buried in gravel or soil. Here, the effluent is evenly distributed and undergoes further treatment as it percolates through the soil.
